Based on my own experience - i will share my way to master the basic bodyflying sensations that help you control four body orientations in the airflow:

  • horizontal on belly;
  • horizontal on back;
  • vertical head up;
  • vertical head down.
  • Belly horizontal
  • Back horizontal
  • Sit vertical
  • Head down verical
When i come to windtunnel - first what i am trying it was a Belly Neutral position!
Belly Neutral position
Low wind speed
~ 190 km/h (118 mph)
Back Neutral position
Low wind speed
~ 190 km/h (118 mph)
Body-right direction transit from
Belly Neutral to Back Neutral position
Low wind speed
~ 190 km/h (118 mph)

AND

Body-left direction transit from
Back Neutral to Belly Neutral position
Low wind speed
~ 190 km/h (118 mph)
Eagle position
Low-Middle wind speed
~ 200 km/h (124 mph)
Sit position
Middle wind speed
~ 215 km/h (134 mph)
Back direction transit from
Belly Neutral to Back Neutral
Low-Middle wind speed
~ 200 km/h (124 mph)

AND

Front direction transit from
Back Neutral to Belly Neutral
Low-Middle wind speed
~ 200 km/h (124 mph)
Bear position on the net
Middle-High wind speed
~ 225 km/h (140 mph)

AND

Shuttlecock position on the net
Middle-High wind speed
~ 225 km/h (140 mph)
Bear position
High wind speed
~ 245 km/h (152 mph)

AND

Shuttlecock position
High wind speed
~ 245 km/h (152 mph)
Back direction transit from Sit to Bear position
High wind speed
~ 245 km/h (152 mph)

AND

Front direction transit from Sit to Bear position
High wind speed
~ 245 km/h (152 mph)
Back direction transits "ring" - using Sit, Bear, Mantis positions.
High wind speed
~ 225 km/h (140 mph)

However, just a couple of days after finishing the course, I had already learned how to fly head-down orientation. First, I started learning to stand on my head on the net using a middle and later middle-high wind speed.
Then, as I gradually developed a sense of balance in the Bear and Shuttlecock positions, i began increasing the wind speed until I was able to lift off in these positions.
Then, as I gradually developed a sense of balance in the Bear and Shuttlecock positions, i began increasing the wind speed until I was able to lift off in these positions.
Based on my experience, one of the learning paths that is the most challenging but also the fastest is to follow this sequence:

1. Belly Neutral position – flying on the belly in a horizontal orientation.
2. Back Neutral position – flying on the back in a horizontal orientation.
3. Sit position – flying in a vertical head-up orientation.
4. Bear (or/and Shuttlecock) position – flying in a vertical head-down orientation.
I started learning Bodyflying at a time when there were hardly any videos or social media platforms where you could watch how people fly. There was no instagram or any other content source dedicated to flying. The overall flying level back then was significantly lower compared to today’s standards. Flights were quite rough, lacking the precision and technique that we see now.

When i completed my instructor course and became an instructor, i had mastered three key skills: flying in Belly Neutral position, on my Back Neutral position, and in a Sit position (actually, Sit position came to me even earlier than Back Neutral position).
